eScreening
Share PrinteScreening is a web based tool which allows Veterans to complete clinical screenings remotely at their convenience. Veteran submitted data can satisfy clinical reminders, generate health factors, create an unsigned editable note, and satisfy measurement based care for mental health. eScreening can be used to complete standardized national measures and customizable assessments. eScreening was developed by the Center of Excellence for Stress and Mental Health (CESAMH) at VA San Diego in 2012. • 90% of Veterans aged 20 to 70 were satisfied or very satisfied with their eScreening experience.
• Except for alcohol use, paper and eScreening veterans had similar rates of positive screens for TBI, depression, and PTSD. In another study involving Veteran focus group and survey feedback, the majority of veterans interviewed stated that they strongly preferred eScreening to paper-based assessment and 90% of Veterans felt comfortable entering personal information (Almklov et al., 2020).
• Staff feedback about eScreening was positive.
• Nearly all staff felt eScreening would fit well into their clinical setting at pre-implementation. See more

Implementation
Timeline
-
Pre-implementation
Identify pilot programs and champions to implement eScreening. Check the eScreening Sharepoint for the current availability of eScreening for your facility. Ensure informatics provides MHE RPCS CONTEXT secondary menu option for users. Attend the trainings offered by the eScreening team. Establish proposed workflows for who will be using the software, and how they will collect and share Veterans data. -
Implementation
Launch an active pilot collecting data from Veterans. Consistently check in with Veterans completion rates and speak to them about their experiences. Status should be reported to staff and leadership, and adjustments to workflows made accordingly. -
Sustainment
Based on lessons learned in initial pilot, identify further programs to implement in and a facility coordinator to organize deployment. Institutionalize knowledge in SOPs, standard workflows, and widespread training. Attend eScreening community of practice meetings with national stakeholders to stay up to date on software capabilities and plans.
